Skull Mesa

Skull Mesa

Date: March 19th 2021

Location: Cave Creek AZ

Distance: 11.4 miles

Hiking Partners: Colin and Uncle J

This was a really weird hike. The trail brings you all the way to the base of Skull Mesa then randomly turns the opposite way and loops all the way around the mountain till you finally reach the top.

The trail starts next to a creek that, yes, I get to play in!

Being that the trail was next to the creek for the first part was pretty awesome. I love water hikes so this was a treat for me.

The trail itself was well maintained.

There was a few petroglyphs here and there.

Once we made it to the top, the views were awesome!

Colin even had a little hitchhiker!

We started heading back down and ran into a few problems.

I fell on a scree filled part of the trail and did what Colin would call a contortionist move. My leg when one way and my foot went another. Luckily, I landed on my fist and was able to catch myself somewhat. Some small scratches on my knee and after a minute of assessing the situation I was up and continued hiking. No knee, ankle or any leg injuries besides a little blood. A little blood and sweat but no tears! My hand was a little different story. I ended up pulling my forearm tendon and couldn't bend my two fingers up. After some icing and rest it went back to normal.

Colin was also training on this hike for another coming up and was feeling the weight. As we hiked Uncle J and myself looked back to see if he was okay and saw the look on his face and the movement that we can really only call The Death March.

Colin also ran out of water on this hike. Luckily he had just bought an on the go water filter system that he brought with him. Once we reached the creek again he filled back up and was ready to go.

Fall and running out of water happens but how this trail weaved away from Skull Mesa was so bizarre and totally turned us off for this trail. We made it out in one piece but will never do it again!

Not all hikes turn out the way we want but we always find the fun even when its hard to find!

Until next time!
